Live-In Help/Nannies
Live-in help is another option when you have extra living space and need long-term child care. Certified nannies generally provide a high standard of care, but are the most expensive type of live-in help. Some parents of twins choose to hire older adults or college students who are interested in exchanging live-in help for room and board. Nannies can be located through a nanny service or other employment agencies, while students can be found through university newspaper ads or a campus job information office. When choosing who will provide your live-in assistance, the process will go more quickly and easily if you know exactly what type of person you want and are clear as to your babysitting needs. If you hire students, keep in mind that schedules will change from term to term and that they will want to move on once their education is complete. If you need help at set hours during the day or want someone who is more likely to make a longer-term commitment, then perhaps a student isn’t right for your situation.
Although locating a person who is willing to give live-in child-care can be time-consuming, do not rush the process! Finding a quality person who is congenial to your home life is an absolute necessity.
Linda and Todd chose to hire a college student to live in when they had their second set of twins. “Right before I found out I was pregnant with twins for the second time, Todd received a promotion to a higher management position. His new job required that he fly out of town on Monday mornings and return home on Thursday evenings. With the discovery of my twin pregnancy, I panicked, thinking about all those evenings alone with infant and three-year-old twins. We agreed to find someone who could provide constant care. At first, we considered a nanny but found that to be too expensive. Next, we searched for a college student, for we were fortunate to have a spare room over our garage and to live only two miles from a university. A female student moved in during the last part of my pregnancy and exchanged some child care hours for room and board. This met all our needs and I especially liked knowing she was there for me during the night, if an emergency arose.”
